Equity Bank is one of the largest banks in Eastern Africa. Based in Kenya, Equity has a mission to bring financial services to the traditionally unbanked.
Perhaps unique to the banking community, in 2015 Equity Bank launched Equitel, a mobile telecoms operator. This allows the bank to provide its customers a fully mobile banking experience, from current accounts to loans to airtime and mobile data access.
Snapp was asked to lead the project to build the bank's smartphone apps on iOS and Android. These apps are the primary means by which the bank's customers perform their day-to-day banking.
Beyond core banking features, the apps support complete management of a customer's mobile telecoms services - airtime, data and SIM cards. In a market where multiple SIM cards are commonplace, a simply way to manage all mobile accounts is a considerable benefit.
Throughout the project we developed the apps alongside the bank's team with intensive code reviews and close cooperation with the core banking teams.
